I chose a particularly eventful day to stop procrastinating and spend all day working, uninterrupted by reading news online. After eight long hours in my salt mine, I turned to BBC to find out that Israeli forces are advancing to Gaza and that two Croatian military officials have been acquitted before the ICTY.

I haven’t posted to the blog for almost two years now. I am not happy about that, but at one point I started feeling like there is no space in the blogosphere left for this particular blog. I was mostly covering political and social issues in Serbia and I tried to write about it the way I perceived it: with just the right distance to both take it personally and be able to see the dynamic with which social and political relations were shaping in Serbia.

Bregovic wrote a song of utter imbecility. The lyrics are a string of meaningless terms (Belgrade, Balkans, kissing, howitzer) and repetition of “three times”. The singer is the latest turbo folk wunderkid, whose main quality is his unusual hair cut.

It’s just as well that Serbia isn’t a nuclear power. If it were, all Serbs would immediately have to brush up on atomic structure, or better yet, become experts in nuclear physics.

Getting out of traffic tickets is a common topic of conversation in Serbia, right up there with salaries and last year winter’s snow. I myself don’t lack in such stories. Surely, I must have told you about the time a cop pulled me over near Trebinje, or when that policeman got mighty pissed at me in Čačak.

Yesterday evening, as I was walking home from work, I noticed an immense number of people standing in a line. Intrigued by it, I walked the entire length of the line, to see where it ends. It stretched from Palace “Albania” to Saborna (Cathedral) Church, and for those of you not familiar with Belgrade: it’s a long fucking line.

I am very fond of elections. There is something in the electoral process that makes me wanna pee, and boy oh boy, does it bring back childhood memories. Last Sunday was an Election Day for three Serbian municipalities: Kosjerić, Voždovac and Zemun.

Last night I went to Walmart and bought me a six-pack and drank it in me trailer and watched Eurosong. No, not really, I don't have a trailer and I get drunk after half a pint and we don't have Walmart here. European equivalent would be Aldi's, but that didn't make it to Serbia either. What we have is Maxi, and speaking of which, I did watch the Eurosong last night.

One of the church's officials he named got terribly insulted and filed a lawsuit against Petakov. But, another person who got terribly insulted was the judge who heard the case. In fact, he said that this sort of insult against the church was not heard even in the communist era. Petakov not only insulted the dude who sued him, but also all Christians and the judge himself, the judge being a baptized person.

Slavija is how we refer to the north-east part of Savski Venac municipality. Most of the kids who grew up here attended Petar Petrović Njegoš elementary school and later grew up to become unemployed. Seen the kids who offer to wait in line for visas at the German embassy in exchange for a small fee? That's us - the perks of living in the capital city.

A diplomatic cocktail. You are sipping your martini, bewildered by the amount of snobs per square foot. They are all chatting about superfluous topics and you are trying your best to follow their conversations and see if anyone of them will break into something remotely piquant or important for international relations. Finally, with the confidence of 007, you swallow the tasteless pitted olive and walk up to Moroccan military attaché and his wife...

All of our poliical parties say they are anti-fascist, in the light of the neo-nazi/fascist rally about to take place in Novi Sad. But, when Serbian political parties express anti-fascist feeling, they usually mean
anti-Croatian/Ustashe feeling, not anything against fascism itself.

A show called Bargain Hunt was on BBC. The show is about people who compete in who will buy antiques that will lose least money when resold in an auction. "Oh, Sally, look at this 1915 piss-pot which was used in a First World War field hospital. So beautiful! It's a piece of history, and still practical! Only £200.."

I had to run an errand to a church the other day. "What are you, an altar boy!?" I hear you say. No, no, I'm just a spineless person who has done some work for the Church more than once. They are alright to work for, as long as you take only cash, no checks or indulgences!

Our biggest democratic party striked us with a rather morbid quote of late Zoran Đinđić: “People, we only got one life!” Aside for obvious theological implications, I’m very dissapointed that a political party has to use images of a dead person (no matter how good a prime minister he was) to promote themselves. It does make me think they don’t have anybody who is good AND has a pulse.
